Eurovision Song Contest United Kingdom 1972

The Eurovision Song Contest 1971 was won by Monaco, but its broadcaster Télé Monte-Carlo declined to host the contest, citing the lack of a suitable venue, technical limits and costs. Spain and Germany, which had finished second and third, declined as well, and the BBC stepped in when no other offers came. The 1972 contest was therefore held in Edinburgh, the United Kingdom, the fourth time the United Kingdom hosted the contest and the first time outside London. It remains the only contest held in Scotland. The final was held on 25 March in the Usher Hall and the presenter was Moira Shearer. 18 countries took part.

Vicky Leandros, who represented Luxembourg, won with Après toi and 128 points, 14 points ahead of the United Kingdom’s Beg, Steal or Borrow by The New Seekers. Germany’s Nur die Liebe lässt uns leben by Mary Roos was third. It was the third victory for Luxembourg, after 1961 and 1965.
