After Tanel Padar, Dave Benton and 2XL won the Eurovision Song Contest 2001 with Everybody, the 2002 contest was held in Tallinn, Estonia. It was the first time Estonia hosted the contest, and the first contest held in one of the former Soviet republics. The final was held on 25 May in the Saku Suurhall, the host broadcaster was ETV and the presenters were Annely Peebo and Marko Matvere. The contest had a slogan for the first time, “A Modern Fairytale”, which was seen in the postcards between the songs. 24 countries took part. Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Finland, Macedonia, Romania and Switzerland returned after being relegated, while Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway and Poland had to stay away. It was the only time Ireland and Norway were relegated. Latvia took the place that was left open when Portugal withdrew.
Marie N from Latvia won with I Wanna and 176 points, 12 points ahead of Malta’s 7th Wonder by Ira Losco. Estonia’s Runaway was third. It was Latvia’s first victory, at its third participation. Each broadcaster could choose between full televoting and a mix of televoting and jury, and no household could vote more than three times.
